MY #1 SHOPPING RULE: THE RULE OF 5
A RULE I CREATED TO BE MORE INTENTIONAL WITH MY PURCHASES TO HELP STRETCH MY SHOPPING BUDGET TO IT’S MAXIMUM CAPACITY
WHO ELSE HAS BOUGHT A NEW TOP BECAUSE YOU “LOVED IT SO MUCH” THEN MONTHS LATER IT STILL HASN’T BEEN WORN?
We’ve all been there! There has been a time in our life we’ve walked in our closet looking for something to wear only to be reminded of the items we purchased but still haven’t worn, tags still attached and all.
When we make impulse purchases we end up with a closet of one offs that we only have one other item to wear with it, if even that.
When we make impulse purchases we end up with a closet full of clothes yet still have NOTHING to wear. WHY are we like this?!
In 2013, after losing 20lbs, purging 90% of my closet and only having a clothing budget of $150 a month I was in desperate need of a high functioning wardrobe. That is when, why and how I created my #1 shopping rule, The Rule of 5.
I knew in order to still buy quality pieces I loved I was going to have to get creative (and disciplined) and that’s exactly what I did. Every single purchase I made for the following year was well thought out and 100% intentional. I had no room for impulse purchases, the function of my wardrobe couldn’t afford it.
I bet you don’t like throwing your money away, do you?
We all deserve to hit our financial goals (and best wardrobes) and a great starting point is to become more intentional with what we spend our money on.
I want you to be great in everything you do so I wrote a 24 page book to fully share The Rule of 5 with you. There’s even worksheets for you to brainstorm your goal wardrobe!

If you need more help building your wardrobe my e-book, Build Your Dream Wardrobe on a Budget is a great tool. The 12 steps I take when planning and shopping for my wardrobes each season is covered in detail with examples for you. These are the steps I take to ensure each purchase is intentional, it’s also the strategy I used to budget to purchase my first Louis Vuitton handbag. In fact, The Rule of 5 is one of the 12 steps in the e-book.
FEATURE MOCKNECK BODYSUIT
This bodysuit is a shaper and she does SNATCH!! She’s very snug so you may want to go up a size but she will give with time. I’ve had this bodysuit for two Fall/Winter seasons now and it has been a staple both years. It’s classic and goes with everything. Not to mention it pulls you in and smooths you out. The only con I have with this bodysuit is it is full bottom and these hips, thighs and bum need a thong to avoid panty lines. They may have a thong version now so check for that if you’re like me.

SHORTS
My exact shorts are two seasons ago but an updated version was released this Fall, unsure as to why in the Fall but the updated version is now 60% off. These are Madewell so excellent quality and cut and they don’t lose shape.
SIZE: TTS
COAT
This was the purchase of the season last year! I scored this Faux Fur coat at H&M for $150 and it was worth every penny. It sold out within a week never to be seen again. H&M is known to have a statement piece in very limited quantity at or below wholesale price to gain word of mouth excitement for marketing purposes and I believe this was one of those pieces. I’ve found a very very similar coat but it is around $450…. However, if you’re able to splurge I do think it’s worth it.
BOOTS
I wear these boots far too much, I stopped giving my others any shine. They do run a bit small so size up a half size.

JEANS
Unfortunately, this exact style has sold out but I linked an updated version from the same brand in the same cut. I recommend getting your TTS.
BOOKBAG
A nice little Chanel inspired bag! The quality is great for the price, there’s 4+ color options available and she comes prime!!

FLARE JEANS
Summer Denim coming in for the 99-2000 …. this was surely what we were wearing then! These jeans are amazinggg!!! They are so soft and stretchy, they do hold you in a bit. These are by far the best Abercrombie jeans I’ve had. I’m 5’4″ with short legs and a longer torso (considering), I’m wearing a 3-4 inch heel with these and the waistband comes up just above my belly button.
SIZE: I’m wearing my TTS in the regular length.
COAT
A good ole thrift find I scored this Summer. I highly recommend looking for vintage wool coats at your local thrift stores. The quality is insane compared to what you can find in the stores currently.
PRO TIP: go to the better off neighborhoods and shop their thrift stores.

CAMO PANTS
I thrifted my pants and recommend doing the same if you’re able to find them. The pair I have linked is also thrifted pants but with a high mark up. Both are old military pants. Being that these are old military pants it is very hard to size them. I have no clue what size mine are, I just eyeballed it. There’s no sizing visible in the pants either.
I wear these year around, mostly to run errands … because that is my life.
